What Can We Test?

Chlamydia

Chlamydia is a bacterial infection, it is 1 of the most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the UK.

Chlamydia is mainly spread through unprotected vaginal, oral or anal sex. If you’re pregnant, you can also pass it to your baby.

Symptoms

Not everyone with chlamydia has symptoms. Common symptoms include unusual discharge from your vagina or penis and pain when peeing.

Treatment

Chlamydia is treated with antibiotics. You can get treatment from a sexual health clinic.

Prevention

You can help to prevent chlamydia by using a condom during sex and not sharing sex toys.

Gonorrhoea

Gonorrhoea is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by bacteria called Neisseria gonorrhoeae or gonococcus. It used to be known as "the clap". Gonorrhoea is easily passed between people through: unprotected vaginal, oral or anal sex sharing vibrators or other sex toys that have not been washed or covered with a new condom each time they're used The bacteria can infect the entrance to the womb (cervix), the tube that passes urine out of the body (urethra), the rectum and, less commonly, the throat or eyes. The infection can also be passed from a pregnant woman to her baby. If you're pregnant and may have gonorrhoea, it's important to get tested and treated before your baby is born.

Symptoms

Typical symptoms of gonorrhoea include a thick green or yellow discharge from the vagina or penis, pain when peeing and, in women, bleeding between periods.

But around 1 in 10 infected men and almost half of infected women do not experience any symptoms.

Treatment

Gonorrhoea is usually treated with a single antibiotic injection.

Prevention

Gonorrhoea and other STIs can be successfully prevented by using appropriate contraception and taking other precautions.

Trichomoniasis

Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by a parasite called Trichomonas vaginalis (TV). In women, this parasite mainly infects the vagina and the urethra (the tube that carries urine out of the body). In men, the infection most commonly affects the urethra, but the head of the penis or prostate gland – a gland near the bladder that helps produce semen – can become infected in some cases. The parasite is usually spread by having sex without using a condom. It could also be spread by sharing sex toys if you do not wash them or cover them with a new condom before use. You do not have to have many sexual partners to catch trichomoniasis. Anyone who's sexually active can catch it and pass it on. Trichomoniasis is not thought to be passed on through oral or anal sex.

Symptoms

Women Trichomoniasis in women can cause: abnormal vaginal discharge that may be thick, thin or frothy and yellow-green in colour producing more discharge than normal, which may also have an unpleasant fishy smell soreness, swelling and itching around the vagina – sometimes the inner thighs also become itchy pain or discomfort when passing urine or having sex Men Trichomoniasis in men can cause: pain when peeing or during ejaculation needing to pee more frequently than usual thin, white discharge from the penis soreness, swelling and redness around the head of the penis or foreskin

Treatment

Trichomoniasis is unlikely to go away without treatment, but it can be effectively treated with antibiotics.

Most men and women are treated with an antibiotic called metronidazole, which is usually taken twice a day for 5 to 7 days.

Prevention

Like any sexually transmitted infection (STI), the best way to prevent trichomoniasis is to have safe sex. This means always using a condom.

Syphilis

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI). If it's not treated, it can cause serious and potentially life-threatening problems.

The symptoms of syphilis are often mild and hard to notice. They tend to change over time and may come and go. Symptoms of syphilis include: small sores (ulcers) on your penis, vagina, or around your bottom (anus) – these are usually painless and you may only have one of them sores in other areas, including in your mouth or on your lips, hands or bottom white or grey warty growths most commonly on your penis, vagina or around your anus a rash on the palms of your hands and soles of your feet that can sometimes spread all over your body – this is not usually itchy white patches in your mouth flu-like symptoms, such as a high temperature, headaches and tiredness swollen glands patchy hair loss on the head, beard and eyebrows It can take 3 weeks or more for the symptoms of syphilis to appear after you're infected.

Treatment

Syphilis is treated with antibiotics, which you may have as injections, tablets or capsules.

Treatment may be started before your test result is known. How long you need treatment for will depend on the stage of your syphilis.

Prevention

use a condom when you have vaginal or anal sex
use a condom to cover the penis or a latex or plastic square (dam) to cover the vagina if you have oral sex
make sure you complete treatment if you or your partner have syphilis

HIV

HIV is found in the body fluids of an infected person. This includes semen, vaginal and anal fluids, blood and breast milk. It's a fragile virus and does not survive outside the body for long. HIV cannot be transmitted through sweat, urine or saliva. The most common way of getting HIV in the UK is through having anal or vaginal sex without a condom. Other ways of getting HIV include: sharing needles, syringes or other injecting equipment transmission from mother to baby during pregnancy, birth or breastfeeding

Treatment

Most people experience a short flu-like illness 2 to 6 weeks after HIV infection, which lasts for a week or 2. After these symptoms disappear, HIV may not cause any symptoms for many years, although the virus continues to damage your immune system. This means many people with HIV do not know they're infected. Anyone who thinks they could have HIV should get tested.

Symptoms

Anyone who has sex without a condom or shares needles is at risk of HIV infection. There are many effective ways to prevent or reduce the risk of HIV infection, including: - using a condom for sex - post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) - pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) - treatment for HIV to reduce the viral load to undetectable if you use drugs, never sharing needles or other injecting equipment, including syringes, spoons and swabs

Hepatitis B is a liver infection that is spread through blood, semen and vaginal fluids. The chance of getting it in the UK is low.

Hepatitis C is a virus that can infect the liver. If left untreated, it can sometimes cause serious and potentially life-threatening damage to the liver over many years.

Hepatits B

Hepatitis B is caused by a virus that is spread through blood, semen and vaginal fluids. Prevention Vaccination is the best way to prevent hepatitis B. In the UK, the hepatitis B vaccine is given to babies as part of the 6-in-1 vaccine. You can get hepatitis B from: having vaginal, anal or oral sex without using a condom or dam injecting drugs using shared needles being injured by a used needle having a tattoo or piercing with unsterilised equipment having a blood transfusion in a country that does not check blood for hepatitis B. Blood transfusions in the UK are checked for hepatitis B. If you're pregnant and have hepatitis B, you can also pass it onto your baby during pregnancy or birth. Symptoms Symptoms of hepatitis B infection include: - a high temperature tiredness - pain in your upper tummy - feeling sick or being sick - patches of raised skin that may be itchy (hives) -yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes (jaundice) The infection usually lasts for 1 to 3 months and most people either have no symptoms or mild symptoms. If the infection lasts longer than 6 months it is called chronic hepatitis B.

Blood transfusions in the UK are checked for hepatitis B. If you're pregnant and have hepatitis B, you can also pass it onto your baby during pregnancy or birth. Symptoms Only around 1 in every 3 or 4 people will have any symptoms during the first 6 months of a hepatitis C infection. This stage is known as acute hepatitis C. If symptoms do develop, they usually occur a few weeks after infection. Symptoms may include: - a high temperature of 38C (100.4F) or above - tiredness - loss of appetite - tummy (abdominal) pains - feeling and being sick Treatment Treatment for chronic hepatitis C (those infected for 6 months or more) involves: - tablets to fight the virus - a test to see if your liver is damaged - lifestyle changes to prevent further damage
